Short Scene Activity; The Mountaintop

This morning, take a look at this quick video: Tips to Remember When Writing a Play Script

WRITING TASK: In the comment section of this blog post, take 10-15 minutes to brainstorm some topics for a play that might be important contemporary subject matter for a play. Outline your idea and submit the premise/idea of your play in the comment section below for participation credit this morning. Consider:
  • Where would the action of the play take place? How might this setting be staged?
  • Would you need a single act or several to effectively tell this story? A single scene, or several? Why?
  • What would be the basic PREMISE of your play? A premise is usually a 1-sentence summary of the play. See your vocabulary sheet/notes for further details.
  • What characters would be needed to tell your story?
  • What would be the main conflict of the play? How might this be developed?
  • Would the play end happily or tragically? What are some reasons why this would be your best choice?

After posting, now, working together as a pair or on your own, choose to develop your outline. Create a short scene or monologue in the style of The Colored Museum. Each scene or monologue should have a definite beginning, middle, and end. Aim to write at least 2 to 3 pages (skip lines between character's lines--see format handout for help). Skip lines between speakers. You may format your script like the publishing format in the script if you have to, but be consistent, please. Your scene will be due at the end of class today. You can submit your scene draft to our Google classroom assignment.

Period 2:

if you finish your scene, join a small group of 2-5 to begin reading "The Mountaintop" by Katori Hall together. You can read more about Katori Hall at her website. Complete "The Mountaintop" for homework (see below). Here are some highlights from the Broadway production starring Angela Basset and Samuel L. Jackson.

Please turn in and submit your play draft by the end of class today. If you did not complete your work, please complete it and turn it in late for Monday.

HOMEWORK: Complete "The Mountaintop" and complete the play analysis for the play (this can be found on the Google Classroom site). Due Monday. Also, read this article about the play: "Katori Hall Expresses Rage Over Revisionist Casting of the The Mountaintop" so we can discuss it Monday.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: The Rochester Fringe Festival opened yesterday. Take a catalog and go see a performance this week (the festival runs through next Saturday, Sept. 21--take a friend or family member with you because it's more fun to see a show with someone!) My own original play "The Fighting Girl's Guide to Politics" is opening this weekend on Saturday and Sunday at the School of the Arts during the Fringe, and also runs through next week. Ms. Gamzon is directing an original play written by one of her friends and colleagues called "Colma". Ms. Accorso also has a play that she wrote in the Fringe. Go see our work, or go see any other show.

HOW TO GET EXTRA CREDIT: Write up a short summary of the show you saw. Then, comment on the performance. What did you learn about PERFORMING (acting, directing, singing, dancing, viewing, etc.) from watching the show or about writing (the content of the show or its story). What did you (or your friends) think of the show? Turn in your "review" and gain extra participation credit for this marking period. You may repeat this option as many times as you like. Go see 30 plays, get 30 points of extra credit! Etc.

The action takes place in school, on a dreary day. A scanner awaits. It has asingle act right now. The big idea is the corrupt scanning system. There are 2 characters right now. The conflict should be obvious, you're going to read it. Gee, it'll have a sad ending as well.

The action of my play would take place in a court room the setting would be set up on the stage by putting the stuff that would be in a court room on the stage. I would use 1 act and maybe 3 scenes to get the story a crossed. The premise of my play would be a man name bill going to trial because he killed someone in jail. I would need a grand jury 10 jury's a defendant and defender and a audience. The main conflict of my play is bill killed the man in jail it will be developed through details and background stories. The end will be tragic only to make it interesting

The play takes place in a blossom field near a small house. This setting might be staged with a background green screen with the image of said setting. I would need a single act to effectively tell this story because it would be simple conflict that could easily be resolved. The basic premise of my play would be a young boy finding himself trapped in a field of blossom flowers with no way to get out. I would need a boy and his little brother to tell the story. The main conflict will most definitely start with the older brother finding himself lost a field. This might develop by the field becoming increasingly dangerous as the older brother begins to search for his younger brother. This play would most likely end tragically and the reason why it would end this way is because it's the most realistic and honest ending to put.

My play will be set in a pre-op room in a hospital. It will be one act and one scene. It will be about the struggle between maintaining control over your body and mind while being asked to surrender to surgery and anesthesia. I need a patient, nurses, and parents. The main conflict would be an inner conflict about holding on to control. The main character character will have to come to terms with the fact that sometimes his life is out of his hands. The play will end suddenly with the first dose of anesthesia, unresolved. This makes sense because in my experience whatever baggage and feelings you have, they all end suddenly when you enter the OR. There is no way to resolve fear/courage. In the end, they don't matter once you are asleep.

Where would the action of the play take place? How might this setting be staged?
In a classroom 8 kids to start with sleeping bags etc for school lock in.
Would you need a single act or several to effectively tell this story? A single scene, or several? Why?
several act scenes because several murders take place.
What would be the basic PREMISE of your play? A premise is usually a 1-sentence summary of the play. See your vocabulary sheet/notes for further details.
Just because a person comes off a certain way does not mean that is who they really are.
What characters would be needed to tell your story?
8 kids , A teacher, and a murderer.
What would be the main conflict of the play? How might this be developed?
Somebody is going into the rooms in the night and the hallways a killing the kids.
Would the play end happily or tragically? What are some reasons why this would be your best choice?
I don't know I like to wait until i see how the story is actually folding out

An idea I would use for my play is the Area 51 raid. The action I would use is like 10 people storming an area on the stage filled with "aliens". I would need one scene to effectively tell my story and get the point across. The premise would be a conspiracy gone wrong. I would need teenagers and aliens for my characters along with government workers. The main conflict would be the government vs teens who want to raid Area 51 for the aliens. I would end it tragically because the government wouldn't want anyone to invade the area.

A good idea for a play with a contemporary topic would be the relationship between African American youth with law enforcement. Maybe make the moral of the story be the development of the relationship between the totally different types of people. The action could take place possibly on the street, the stage being designed with streetlights, signs, etc. A single act could be used effectively to get the point across. The premise of the play would be to mend a broken relationship of distrust between black youth and law enforcement that is supposed to protect them. Two African American teens, 1 girl and 1 boy, as well as 2 white (or non black) cops and possibly miscellaneous people like parents or something. The play would end happily and the main conflict would be in the beginning between the teenagers and the cops, making the rest of the scene about mending the distrust

One contemporary issue I might want to write about is the vaping and juuling crisis. I'm not sure where the action would take place. I would probably want teenagers as my characters. Another idea is climate change and the burning of the Amazon--I could use symbolism and an actual person as the forest/world who is doing something human (maybe at a sauna or a doctors appointment). The main character would be an older lady who could be reflecting on her past. Or it could be a younger lady going into a sauna and then it gets too hot and she tries to escape. The other person in the room could be silent the entire time and just enjoying the sauna and could be labeled "big businesses". He would kind of just relax in the heat and the lady would be freaking out. The premise of my story would be climate change and it could be just a single scene. The ending of this play would most likely be tragic and dramatic as the lady gets more scared.

Scene is in the a senate and and is filled with vape smoke, and in the seats are people fighting for the right to vape, and others who are fighting to ban it, and people around them who have passed away who are relating this to when they were alive in the 20s and 30s relating this to their situation of prohibition.

the action of my play will begin in a house, it will be staged in a room with two characters. I would need a single act to tell this story effectively with a few scenes. This is because I don't want the play to drag out when I can just get right to the point. The premise of the play would simply be the two characters telling each other how they feel, but one doesn't seem to see the hurt they're causing. Only two characters are needed for the play and the main conflict of the play would be them arguing. Developing this arguing, feelings will be explained and the truth not able to handle. The play will end sad, but with a relieving feeling. it will be sad because the way the characters feel about each other, how they make each other feel, and relieved because it was off their chest.

My play will be about a student who goes to a teacher for help in class because he is struggling with the class. I will need two scenes to tell this story. The play will take place in a class room and there will be two characters, the student and the teacher. The teacher and the student get into a little argument and disagreement. The conflict in the play is person v person.
