Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing: Day 2

Please turn in your script outline/storyboards today. We will continue viewing Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing today in class.

Spike Lee: Examining a Film

As we study film, one thing we will consider, apart from an examination of the history and context of a film, is the auteur or maker of the film.

As you watch this film, please complete a film analysis sheet (this can also be found on our Google classroom site). This will be due when we complete the film.

HOMEWORK: Please read the Chapter: Birth of Film & watch the following short film: Crash course Film Studies #1: Films are Magic. Take notes on key ideas and concepts. You may use the Cornell notes graphic organizer or your own notes. Taking notes can help you when you are tested on this material (and you will be). Remember you will need a film journal or notebook for this course!

Finally, also as homework, please post in the COMMENT section an answer to the following:

In the COMMENT section below, please answer the following questions (answer in the same post please):
  • Generally, how do you watch films? Do you stream films online? Do you watch primarily Youtube videos and not full-length films? Do you pay to see films at first run cinemas like Tinseltown or Regal or Lowes? Do you watch films in second run theaters like Cinemark in Brighton (Brighton Movies 10)? Do you go to small independent theaters like The Cinema or The Little Theater or the Dryden Theater? Do you watch DVD's, BlueRay, or VHS tapes? Do you use a network service like ROKU or HULU or Amazon Prime? Do you watch films on demand or from a cable or satellite dish network? Do you just have to imagine a film from what others tell you about it?
  • How important is watching/viewing films in your life or the life of your family? Is it a rare treat, a daily activity, or somewhere in between? Do you generally watch films alone, with a friend, with a relative, or with a group of people?
  • What was the last film you saw (include where you saw it) and why did you see it? [The name, perhaps the year of the film, or when you last saw the film (yesterday, last weekend, 3 months ago, etc.?) and why you saw it: homework project, for school, to avoid schoolwork, as a social activity with friends, as a promise to your sibling, as a babysitter while waiting for a parent to come home, as a time killer, as an interested student of film or art, as a date, etc.]

1. I primarily watch films by going to the movie theater, typically Regal movie theaters. I also use sources such as Netflix and Hulu a lot, whereas I rarely watch movies on cable or via DVD, but I would say I watch more YouTube videos than I do films.

2. Viewing films is somewhere in between a rare treat and daily routine and typically I watch films with my companion or with my family. It is simply time spent together with those I care about, films bring people together to seek a common focus or interest.

3. The last film I saw was Do The Right Thing in which we watched today in class as we are focusing on film studies and analyzing this movie.

1. I'll mostly watch movies on streaming sites if I'm watching movies that have already left the theaters. When watching newer movies I'll go to theaters Like Tinseltown or Regal.

2. Movies have always been a large part of my hobbies. I started out watching movies with family and slowly grew into watching movies independently.

3. Last movie I watched was Rush Hour (1998). I watched it Saturday a towards the end of my night after all of my homework and chores were done. I also hadn't seen the movie in a while.

1) I don't really watch movies. I mainly watch them for my Abnormal Psych thru Film class. I'm not interested in watching them even though I have YouTube, Netflix, etc. I'll go to the movie theaters occasionally but I end up falling asleep or being uninterested.

2) Viewing films is not important at all to my family. I watch them alone. I don't think I've ever watched a film with my family nor has my family made an effort to watch a movie together.

3) The most recent film I saw was Me, Myself, and Irene and that was a month ago. I watched it for by Abnormal Psych class. I watched it because I had to. I did it to get a grade. It was a peculiar movie.

1- How I generally watch movies is at home, on my tablet or my father's television. maybe once in a while I would go to see a movie inside of a movie theater, but I enjoy watching them at home, so I can be in my own home, enjoying whatever I do watch.
2- Actually, movie watching is not something I do often, and I can say that when speaking on behalf of my family. we're, ironically, book readers. We love reading, it gives us a different and better satisfaction from when we're watching movies. we do enjoy it though it is rare.
3- the latest film I watched was cyberbully. I watched it yesterday with my sisters and my mother because we thought it would be something good to watch with a clear message, although I was talking through most of it.

1-I usually watch movies at home on the television on demand. If I want to see a new movie I usually go to the movies. I also watch movies on Netflix and on Hulu. When I do go to the theatre I usually go to Tinsletown because they have comfortable chairs.

2-I watch movies here and there. I'm not so big on watching movies unless its something new. I can't really watch the same thing over and over again. My family doesn't really go to the movies that much and if they do it has to be something very interesting.

3-The last movie I went to go see was Glass. I went to see it because it was a continuous story of the movie Split and Unbreakable and it was a date.I went to see the movie at the Regal theatre in Henrietta about 2 weeks ago.

1) Generally, I stream films online on various websites and platforms (Netflix, Hulu, several Putlockers). However, I do indulge in YouTube videos quite a bit. Occasionally, it is also good to go out and see a movie at the cinema, my favorite local theater is Tinseltown--I like the aesthetic of it. I haven't watched a DVD since Netflix and Hulu and other online forums were invented, at this point, I find them somewhat irrelevant; I can also vividly imagine films from short descriptions from my peers.

2) Films are essential to my life. I generally watch films alone, but when I watch it with friends or family--I find that it brings everybody close together. All under the same roof to watch an hour or two of something they're all intrigued by.

3) The last film I saw was Creed II, made in 2018. I saw it the 26th of January I believe, at the Movies 10 in Henrietta, which seemed to be the only theater that had it. I went with a friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while, with school having been let out for a week prior. It was a great film, and I definitely recommend it.

1. I definitely watch more youtube videos than full-length films. But, when I want to watch a movie I will go with my friends to either a first run or (preferably) second run theater, depending on what movies are showing or if I've been anticipating the release of a movie. I also go to small independent theaters occasionally. Lastly, sometimes when I hangout at one of my friend's house we will watch a movie on Netflix or some other service.

2. Watching films is pretty important in my life, and my family's as well, although we almost never watch movies together anymore. I see movies on average about 2 times a month, but every time I go to the movie theater it feels like a rare treat. I almost always watch movies with my friends.

3. I believe the last movie I watched in theaters was Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) in January as a date with my girlfriend at Regal Cinemas Henrietta 18. But the last movie I watched was with my friends when we were hanging out at Jesse's in January... it was some horror movie on Netflix and we decided not to finish it because no one was paying attention.

I usually watch movies on Netflix and I watch them most by myself and analyze them. Sometimes I'm analyzing them too much. I usually watch movies every single day if I'm not too tired and if I have enough time to. The last movie I watched was a movie called Howl's Moving Castle and I loved every minute.

1.) I don't pay to watch films often unless I feel like the money will be worth it. If there is a movie I really want to see I normally watch it on Netflix or wait for it to be available online.

2.) Movies are very important to my family. We never watch movies together because we can only hand each other in small does, but there was a time where we would watch all types of movies together. Even though we don't watch movies together anymore, we still watch them separately and just as much as we did before. Even though I enjoy watching movies, I haven't been watching any lately because I have no time.

3.) The last film I've watched is Do the Right Thing for a school assignment. I watched it last night because I missed the movie during class.

1. i watch films either by using netflix/hulu or typing it into google like"watch (insert movie) free online full movie" because i don't have the money time or energy to purchase or rent it. i like watching youtube because its entertaining. i go to the actual movies when a movie that i like comes out but i go when i can / want
2. personally i like movies and analyzing them and watching them but its not essential to my life i watch movies like whenever like ill be procrastinating and ill watch a movie or it'll be midnight and im like i should watch moana again. my family never watches movies together lol we barely even eat dinner together. i usually watch films alone
3. the last new movie i watched was the strangers (2008) on netflix like a week ago and i watched it just because it was like 11 and i was like lets watch this ive heard about this before it was okay it was mad slow though i understand why (bc its horror/thriller and you need to build suspense) but i did not have the energy

1. I generally watch films on netflix or youtube, or sometimes on illegal websites when I can't find them anywhere else. I also watch stuff on cable if I'm bored too. I do go to movie theaters because I like the environment and the snacks.

2. It is very important to me because it fuels my creativity for this class, and also is entertaining so... two in one :p I usually watch them alone but sometimes I'll watch them with a friend if I'm at their house.

3. I think the last film I watched was this weird british movie called "Angus,Thongs and Perfect Snogging" which is a funny but weird coming of age movie. I watched it with my friend so we could make fun of it and because I was at her house.
